High Barn Holiday Cottages News & Offers

2015 November Newsletter

November 2015 Newsletter James Foster

Happy Autumn everybody.

The latest newsletter is a little belated as things have been particularly busy since the start of the year, but now that the pace has slowed a little & Autumn is well and truly upon us, I thought it would be a good idea to note down the latest developments and immediate projects.

As Mum and Dad welcomed in the New Year, they followed that by welcoming myself, partner Sarah-Jane and young sons Harry & Jack into Garden Cottage which was to be our home for the following six months. At the end of January we packed up and left London after 10 years or so in the city and headed north to join the family business and put down some roots in the East Riding.
The move had been discussed and mulled over for a number of years, and it is lovely to be finally settled with a new house, new job and new (ish) surroundings.

This year there has been a little more focus on the farming aspect of the business and after a general tidy up round the farm which involved the emptying of a few rather cluttered barns, we also pushed ahead with the construction of some new grain sheds which will be powered from one of the wind turbines. This has proved to be a frustrating build as we were hoping to have it finished before Harvest, but here we are in November with work still to do. On a positive note the finished product looks great and we had a good Harvest, all we need now is the price of grain & beans to lift.

On the cottage front, we are going to re-model and re-fit the bathrooms at the Field House site in both The Byre and The Old Dairy, adding contemporary walk in showers and new units throughout. We expect this to be finished prior to Christmas.

At High Barn we have opened up weekends for two nights, and out of season, accept short breaks of two or more nights mid-week also. In doing so, we have noticed an immediate response with many of our customers wanting a relaxing few days at the coast or tying it in with a production at Bridlington Spa or The Theatre in the Round, Scarborough. We are currently looking at ways to enhance the wild flower meadow, develop more fully some walks around the fields, plant some fruit trees and maintain the pond. The fruit trees will be planted this November/ December & we will have to wait until next year to see how the meadow develops. High Barn sailed through it's annual inspection recently, as did Field House and the two apartments in York.

Garden Cottage, our very first letting unit, is undergoing a more significant transformation and is to be extended on the ground floor, reconfigured internally and completely redecorated. Work started on this in the first week of this month, so photos and updates should be forthcoming in the near future. This is more of a long-term project, so estimated completion dates are vague at the moment. We should know more when the next newsletter is published in 2016.

From all the family, we wish you a Happy Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous and healthy New Year.
